Icon 2.5 EW

Flying insect pests remain a concern to businesses and home owners by causing discomfort and serving as carriers of a number of diseases. The space spraying of insecticides, such as Icon 2.5 EW, is continually proven as a powerful tool in controlling such unwanted pests.

Space spraying or fogging, is the treatment of open or residential spaces with airborne droplets of an insecticide to kill flying insects. It is critical to let the time of application coincide with the insect pests’ periods of peak activity to obtain effective control. It is often used as a part of an integrated management program alongside sanitation, source reduction and larviciding. The aim of integrating the approaches is to reduce the overall insect population by killing breeding adults and reducing the numbers of larvae reaching full development.

What is ICON 2.5 EW?
ICON 2.5 EW is a WATER based formulation containing the active ingredient lambda-cyhalothrin. This second generation pyrethroid is active at exceptionally low rates such as flies, mosquitoes and other nuisance pests including those important vectors of disease. It is a non-systemic insecticide with contact and stomach action.

Product Safety

After world-wide testing lambda-cyhalothrin formulations are now registered and used in over 100 countries. They are approved by the Health and Safety Executive in the United Kingdom and the Environmental Protection Agency in the USA for the control of insect pests.

Fate in soil
Lambda-cyhalothrin is readily degraded in most soils and the products of degradation are ultimately converted to carbon dioxides and other benign metabolites. It does not leach through the soil and is almost insoluble in water. Therefore, it is unlikely to produce hazard in normal use.

Fate in water
Although lambda-cyhalothrin can be shown to be toxic to fish and some aquatic invertebrate organisms under laboratory conditions, it presents little hazard to aquatic life under field conditions due to the intended manner of use (not expected result in exposure to water) and very low application rates.

Carcinogenicity and Teratogenicity
Lambda-cyhalothrin is not carcinogen or teratogen.

Applicator Exposure
When label recommendations are followed and appropriate personal protective equipment worn, there is negligible risk to the applicator.

Application Rates and Use

Always follow the instructions on the label. The product should be applied by an appropriately trained operator with minimum protective equipment such as gloves, cover all, face shield, boots, goggles, head gear and long sleeves.

Space Spray Application
for the control of flying insects ICON 2.5 EW should be diluted in water applied via ULV or thermal fogger.

  • Prepare no more than spray mixture that is needed for the immediate operation.
  • Add the measure quantity of concentrate to the appropriate diluent in the half-filled spray tank. Maintain agitation while topping up.
  • Always stir the spray mixture well and apply within few hours.

Intrinsic activity of lambda-cyhalothrin
The efficacy of various pyrethroids was tested against housefly, Musca domestica. Lambda-cyhalothrin and deltamethrin appear broadly similar, with alpha-cypermethrin approximately two-fold less active. Cyfluthrin, on the other hand, appeared markedly less active than lambda-cyhalothrin and deltamethrin, with an LC90 approximately 4.6x higher. Beta-cyfluthrin appeared less active than lambda-cyhalothrin and deltamethrin, with an LC90 approximately 2.6x higher.

Efficacy of Icon EW under Field and Laboratory Conditions

Field drift trials conducted by the Vector Control Research Unit, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Regional Institute for Tropical Medicine – Philippines, demonstrate Icon EW to be highly effective. Icon EW provided control of Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus when applied as either a ULV (Figure 2) or thermal fog (Figure 3) under indoor (Figure 4) and outdoor conditions at a distance of up to 100 meters. Reduced Subjective Facial Sensation (SFS)

To some people pyrethroids may cause Paraesthesia/SFS which is characterised by subjective sensations which includes tingling/burning/numbness of the skin or skin tenderness. This is more likely to occur after direct contact with concentrated formulations which can be mitigated by following the label precautions in particular the use of proper protective equipment. However this produces no damage to the skin and nervous system and not detrimental to the health. Furthermore SFS is transient and reversible. With space spraying of Icon EW, all the above discomfort will be reduced.

Product Highlights

  • Icon® 2.5EW is a 25g/L emulsion in water (EW) formulation containing the second-generation, synthetic pyrethroid active ingredient, lambda-cyhalothrin.
  • Lambda-cyhalothrin-based products, have been successfully evaluated under the new FAO / WHO specification scheme for public health pesticides.
  • Quick knockdown and effectively kills at low rates
  • Highly active against all mosquitoes, including those responsible for malaria and Dengue fever transmission, and those which have developed resistance to other non-pyrethroid insecticides, e.g. DDT, BHC, malathion etc.
  • Has favorable safety and environmental profile
  • Reduce SFS and odor!!!
  • Very cost-efficient
